Princess Caolainn of the Summer Court has her entire future planned out for her: assume the throne, marry the man her father selects, and produce an heir. A life that promises more isolation inside the stone walls of her castle and none of the passion she yearns for.
When the King does an about-face and approves her request to travel to the human realm, Caolainn is granted a few short months to taste freedom and live the life she’s only ever dreamed about. But when an ancient enemy threatens both realms, will Caolainn choose the life planned for her or the one written in her heart?
Sarah Negovetich knows you don’t know how to pronounce her name and she’s okay with that.
Her first love is Young Adult novels, because at seventeen the world is your oyster. Only oysters are slimy and more than a little salty; it’s accurate if not exactly motivational. We should come up with a better cliché.
Sarah divides her time between writing books that her husband won’t read and performing on stage at BE Theatre. Her goal in life is to never grow up.

“I’m going to hurt you,” I choked out. “Hurt both of us.” The words pumped out of me in between great gulps of breath and choking cries.
“I know,” he said softly, holding me even tighter.
“Then why aren’t you running for the door?” I asked into his chest, his damp shirt sticking to my face.
“Because that’s not how life works. I didn’t fall in love with you because it would guarantee me a future of sunshine and rainbows. I don’t even think I made a conscious decision to do it. It just happened. And if that means I get hurt in the end, then that will just happen too.” He rubbed at my back and planted a soft kiss on top of my head. “Our lives don’t get perfectly composed endings with a fancy coda like a classical piece of music. They are messy and complicated and sometimes they don’t make any sense.”
I used a dry inch of his shirt to wipe at my eyes and looked up at him. “Then why do we bother?”
David let out a sad huff of laughter. “Because the alternative isn’t really living at all.”

I could still feel the warmth from her body on the sheets when I reached over, searching for her, and for a moment I wondered…had it been real? Bleary-eyed, I stared at the clock. It was only 7 in the morning. The sound that woke me must have been the door shutting—Aly sneaking away. We must have fallen asleep sometime after midnight.
My next door neighbor, someone I’ve known since before she could walk shouldn’t have stayed over. She’d kept trying to leave, but I’d keep pulling her back into the bed. Not that anything had happened. We’d just talked and hung all over each other, horsing around. Kid shit. I sighed, rubbing my eyes as I sat back down on the edge of the bed. What did I expect? She was a kid. Alyssa Montgomery. What the hell was I doing, hanging with a girl her age? If her parents caught her sneaking back in this morning…
I swore and tripped on the sheet tangled around my leg as I climb out of bed. I opened the door to the backyard to see if she was still visible, but I was too late. It was quiet and cool. I shivered, standing there, wondering when I’d see her again. As I reached for my phone, I saw that three texts had come through. They were all from Rachel Schaffer.

LIBERTY
Crystal Falls, Michigan is a tiny town in the upper peninsula with about fifteen hundred people on a good day. It’s really just a dot in the rearview mirror. My mom, hoping for a better life and a fresh start, moved us up here when I was four. But all it gave us was heartache and anguish. She sold everything we had to be with a man we’d never met only be end up rejected, stranded, and homeless. If it weren’t for Grandma Rose, who knows what would have happened to us. She was our saving grace. Mom and I had been living in our car and had gone into the truck stop to take a shower. She found me digging through the trash for something to eat; it had been almost two days since we’d had any food. This woman took one look at me and opened her heart and home while giving my mom a job and becoming our family. Her diner, Rosebud’s, was left to us when she passed about ten years ago. My mother ran it until she got sick during my senior year in college. I had no idea she had cancer until I saw her at graduation. She was so pale and frail, I thought she was going to break. After we lost her, I was told she wouldn’t allow anyone to tell me she was sick until after I had finished school. She knew I would’ve come home without my degree.
Out of guilt and grief, I’ve kept their memories alive and continued to run the diner, but it’s gotten harder and harder to keep this place going. The lack of tourists has turned Crystal Falls into a ghost town. Truckers traveling from Wisconsin to Michigan don’t even stop here anymore. As much as I love and miss them, there’s nothing left for me here. So, as I flip the open sign to “closed,” I have a bittersweet feeling. I’m closing a legacy as I shut off the lights and lock the doors to an end of an era. With tears running down my face, I pull out of the parking lot and toward the highway. Heading south, I glance in the rearview mirror one last time. I’m petrified at what lies ahead, but I’m excited to get there.

May 2069 … Blood coated bodies littered the ground as the mushroom cloud dissipated in the distance. Horror struck faces stared up at me, frozen forever with tears streaking down soot-covered cheeks. I swallowed hard as I stared into their dead eyes.
“Colizan, would you care to join us for a walk?” Father asked, pulling me from the image in my history book.
I slammed the cover shut and smiled. “Of course, it would be my pleasure.”
The warm sun glinted off the quartz sidewalk as my father, mother, and I strolled from our assigned dwinn in the Northern territory of Atal. Winding our way through the gardens which led to Common Park had always been their preferred route. Picture perfect displays of green grass, sparkling quartz, lush flowers, and elaborate water features dotted the landscape. Mother and Father chatted enthusiastically just ahead of me while I took in the scenery––the same scenery I’d enjoyed every day for eighteen years. I tilted my head back and appreciated the glass and quartz buildings that lined the sky. Some were tall and towering, others round and inviting; I loved them all. I sighed and quickened my pace as we approached my favorite part of the city––the museum. It reminded me of a picture I’d once seen of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, but instead of white and cream concrete, it was all glass. Ever since I was young, I always made it a point to stop and read the plaque outside, and today was no exception.
“ATAL. Est. 2027. Redesigned from the ashes of Atlanta.”
An image of a Genesis machine hovered over the war-struck city in the foreground, and in the background stood the utopian paradise left in its wake. The large spaceship-like device, with its metallic domed body and long tendrils of machinery hanging down, had always fascinated me.
